Lakers win in front of largest hockey crowd since 2000

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State completed the home sweep against Michigan State by winning 3-2 Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers are now 4-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Lakers last swept MSU at home in 2009, winning 2-0 and 4-2.

The attendance, 3,451 at Saturday's game was the Lakers' largest crowdsince March 4, 2000, when LSSU played host to Northern Michigan in front of 3,854 fans.

Sophomore forward Colin Campbell (2-0--2) started LSSU's scoring at 12:11 of the first period. Campbell's goal was assisted by sophomore linemate Kellan Lain (0-1--1) and junior defender Zach Trotman (1-2--3).

Campbell netted his second goal of the game at 16:01 for a 2-0 first-period lead. The power-play goal was assisted by sophomore forward Kyle Jean (4-2--6) and sophomore defenseman Andrew Perrault (0-2--2).

Junior forward Nick McParland (3-1--4) netted the game-winning goal from freshman forward Buddy Robinson (0-1--1) and Perrault at 1:54 of the second period. At 10:52 of the second MSU's Jake Chelios scored on a one-timer off a turnover in the Lakers' zone, trimming the lead to 3-1.

Sophomore goaltender Kevin Kapalka (4-0-0 overall, 2-0-0 CCHA) completed his fifth career sweep. Kapalka made 21 saves for the Lakers. During the final minute of the third period, he played 43 seconds against a MSU 6-on-4 advantage and gave up a power-play goal with the Spartans goaltender pulled in favor of an extra attacker at 19:54.

The Lakers were 1-for-2 on the power-play, while Michigan State was 1-for-4.

Jean finished with four points for the weekend, and Perrault compiled three assists.

The Lakers will be home Oct. 21-22 against Bowling Green State and celebrating Parents Weekend.
