Box Score DETROIT - Wayne State relied on a 21-3 run midway through the
second half to overtake the Lake Superior State women's basketball
team during a non-conference outing Saturday at Matthaei Gym. The
Warriors (2-0) went on to win, 70-67.
Lake Superior State (2-2) came from behind to lead by as many as
11 points during the first half. Guard Jasmine Brown hit a
three-pointer for a 47-36 LSSU lead with 15:11 remaining in the
second half, but it was all WSU during the next six minutes.
Freshman guard Kandace Crittendon, who scored a season-high 23
points to lead the Lakers, made two free throws for a 66-65 LSSU
lead with 1:54 remaining in the contest. After Crittendon rebounded
a Wayne State miss and LSSU called a timeout, Maria Blazejewski
made a layup to put the Lakers on top, 67-66.
Wayne State's Deanna Crumpton answered with a jumper with 28
seconds to go and iced the win by making two free throws with two
seconds left.
Crittendon was 8-of-11 from the field with one three-pointer and
6-of-6 at the free-throw line. She also had three assists and two
steals. Blazejewski scored 20 points and led the Lakers in rebounds
with seven. Senior center Cassy Schemberger added eight points and
six rebounds. LSSU shot 43.8 percent from the field, including
4-of-12 from three-point range, and made 21-of-27 free throws.
Phaebre Colbert totaled 16 points and seven rebounds, and
Crumpton added 11 points and six rebounds to lead Wayne State. The
Warriors shot 35.5 percent from the field, including 3-of-18 from
behind the arc, and made 13-of-15 free throws.
LSSU totaled 22 turnovers to WSU's 14.
Lake Superior State plays a non-conference game at 3 p.m. Sunday
at Michigan-Dearborn.
