Lakers drop GLIAC opener at SVSU

UNIVERSITY CENTER - Lake Superior State never recovered from an early first-half deficit and lost its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball opener 73-58 Thursday at Saginaw Valley State.

LSSU (4-4 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) fell behind 38-21 during the first 14 minutes of the game. The Lakers trailed 46-27 at halftime. Saginaw Valley State shot 62.5 percent from the field (20-of-32) during the first half.

LSSU held SVSU (2-3 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) to 10 second-half field goals after giving up 20 during the first half, but could only close the gap to eight points. The positive note, however, is that the Lakers committed only 10 turnovers for the game. They average 21.3 turnovers per contest.

Senior guard Jasmine Brown led LSSU with 14 points. Junior forward Maria Blazejewski followed with 11 points, and freshman guard Kandace Crittendon scored 10. Senior center Cassy Schemberger led the Lakers in rebounds with 10 and scored nine points.

LSSU shot 36.7 percent from the field, including 4-of-19 from three-point range, and made 10-of-15 free throws.

Jasmine Woods scored 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field to lead the Cardinals. SVSU shot 52.6 percent from the field, including 2-of-6 from behind the arc, and made 11-of-15 free throws. SVSU out-rebounded LSSU, 40-29.

The Lakers play at Northwood at 1 p.m. Saturday.
