COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lake Superior State set a school record
of nine ties in a single season with Friday's 1-1 deadlock and
shootout victory at Ohio State.
LSSU (10-12-9 overall, 8-9-8-5 Central Collegiate Hockey
Association) got a goal from Kyle Jean to beat OSU (14-15-3
overall, 9-13-3-2 CCHA) 1-0 in the three-round shootout. The Lakers
improved to 5-3 in CCHA shootouts.
At the end of the first period LSSU was down 1-0. Buckeye John
Albert notched the first goal of the game from Devon Krogh and
Corey Toy at 16:31.
Lake Superior State sophomore forward Ben Power (3-3—6)
tied the game, 1-1, at 18:31 of the second period. Power's
assists went to senior forward Tyson Hobbins (1-3—4) and
senior defender Matt Cowie (4-12—16).
After 25-minutes of scoreless play, including the third period
and overtime, the Lakers and Buckeyes went to the shootout.
Sophomore forward Domenic Monardo (12-13—25) and Power
both missed for the Lakers. OSU's Sergio Somma and Danny
Dries also missed. Jean (1-10—11) scored for his second
shootout winner of the season.
Freshman netminder Kevin Kapalka (9-7-8-5) stopped 35 shots on
goal for LSSU, while Cal Heeter totaled 27 saves.
The Lakers were 0-for-4 on the power play, and OSU was
0-for-2.
With Alaska's game against Michigan State not yet reported, the
Lakers moved into sole possession of sixth place in the CCHA
standings. They trail fifth-place Ferris State by one point heading
into Saturday's game at Value City Arena.
