Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. – Lake Superior State (8-12-7 overall,
6-9-6-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) tallied four
power-play goals to defeat Northern Michigan (11-14-4 overall,
9-10-2-0 CCHA) 4-1 Friday at the Berry Events Center and take an
8-6 lead in the Cappo Cup series.
Sophomore forward Domenic Monardo (11-13—24) netted LSSU's
first man-advantage goal at 3:04 of the first period. Sophomore
forward Zach Trotman (6-10—16) and senior forward Rick
Schofield (11-15—26) assisted on Monardo's goal.
The Wildcats answered with 23 seconds left in the first period,
with Mike Maltese scoring an even-strength goal. It was assisted by
Nicholas Kosink and Tyler Gron.
The Lakers took a 2-1 lead at 5:43 of the second period with
Schofield's game-winning power-play, game-winning goal. It was
unassisted.
LSSU grabbed a 3-1 lead with a power-play goal by Chad Nehring
(5-3--8) at 6:02 of the third period. Senior forward Will Acton
(6-11—17) and senior defender Matt Cowie (4-8—12) had
the assists.
Acton scored again at 14:44 of the third. Cowie and Trotman
recorded the assists.
LSSU held NMU to 0-for-2 on the power-play, while finishing
4-for-8.
LSSU freshman netminder Kevin Kapalka (7-7-6-4) totaled 18
saves. Northern Michigan's Reid Ellingson (7-9-2) totaled 28
saves.
Lake Superior State, which improved to 2-1-0 against the
Wildcats for the season, plays the final game of the series at 7:35
p.m. Saturday in Marquette. The Lakers head into Saturday's contest
tied for eighth place with Ohio State in the CCHA standings and
trail seventh-place NMU by one point.
