Lakers come up short at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Lake Superior State lost to Michigan at a sold out Yost Ice Arena, 4-2, Friday. The Lakers are 12-9-2 overall and 7-7-1-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Michigan stretched its win streak against the Lakers to 14 wins since the 2006-07 season.

The 18th-ranked Lakers are in fourth place in the CCHA with 23 points. No. 13 Michigan (12-8-3 overall, 6-6-3-1 CCHA), which has won three straight games and is 5-0-1 in its last six games, is tied for fifth place with 22.

Michigan took at 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Travis Lynch and David Wohlberg. At 8:27 of the second period, Nick McParland (11-7—18) netted the Lakers' first goal of the game. Sophomore forward Kyle Jean (10-6—16) and junior forward Ben Power (1-6—7) assisted on McParland's goal. LSSU had a chance to tie the game 2-2 during a short-handed break-away midway through the second period, but hit the post.

Chris Brown of Michigan scored the game-winning goal at 17:10 of the second period. The Wolverines led 3-1 heading into the third.

Power brought the Lakers within one goal of the Wolverines at 11:30 of the third period. Power's goal came from McParland. Michigan's Brown netted an empty-net goal at 19:48 of the third, giving U-M the 4-2 victory over the Lakers.

Sophomore netminder Kevin Kapalka (11-7-2-1) made 28 saves for the Lakers. Shawn Hunwick recorded the win for Michigan after making 20 saves in the contest during the first two periods. Adam Janecyk played 20 minutes and stopped seven shots on goal in the third.

The Lakers held Michigan to 0-for-1 on the power-play while Michigan kept the Lakers are 0-for-2 on the power-play.
