Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Four players scored in double figures for
the Lake Superior State men's basketball team, which defeated Lake
Erie 67-62 Monday to record its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference road victory of the season.
Junior guard Derek Billing scored 10 points and sophomore guard
Alex Williams added eight to lead LSSU (4-4 overall, 2-3 GLIAC) to
a 31-25 halftime lead. Despite shooting 50 percent from the field
during the first half, Lake Erie (3-5 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) failed to
reach double digits in scoring until the 7:47 mark of the opening
half.
The Storm found their shooting touch and overtook LSSU late
in the game, claiming a 50-48 lead with 8:29 remaining. They led by
as many as seven points during the second half, but were held
scoreless by the Laker defense during most of the last 5
1/2 minutes of the game.
LSSU's Derek Kinney scored eight points during an 11-0 run as
the Lakers went ahead 61-57 with 23 seconds remaining. Billing,
Jorddan Myrick and Tony Harris were a perfect 6-of-6 at the free
throw line to protect LSSU's during the final seconds.
Kinney finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Billing
added 16 points and five rebounds. Cameron Metz scored 14 points,
and Williams finished with 10. Billing made 3-of-4 three-point
attempts.
LSSU shot 47.5 percent from the field, including 6-of-12 from
three point range, and made 23-of-28 free throws. LSSU
out-rebounded Lake Erie, 27-23.
Rich Austin and Riley Thomas scored 20 points each to lead Lake
Erie. The Storm shot 46.9 percent from the field, including 4-of-20
from behind the arc, and made 12-of-18 free throws.
The Lakers play at Ashland on Wednesday.
