Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. - Lake Superior State lost 6-2 to Northern
Michigan at the Berry Events Center Friday. The Wildcats lead the
season series 2-1 and are up 11 goals to nine in the race for
the Father Cappo Cup heading into Saturday's game.
As of release time the Lakers sit in sixth place in the Central
Collegiate Hockey Association with 41 points. The Wildcats are tied
for seventh place in the CCHA with Ohio State with 39 points. The
Lakers are 16-14-5 overall and 11-12-4-4 in the CCHA, while NMU is
15-12-6 overall and 10-11-6-3 in the CCHA.
The Wildcats opened up scoring with a goal at 5:55 of the first
period from Reed Seckel. At 17:04 of the first, sophomore forward
Kyle Jean (12-10--22) netted LSSU's first goal from junior forwards
Domenic Monardo (10-18--28) and Nick McParland (14-10--24).
NMU scored three unanswered goals (one even-strength goal, one
4-on-4 and one 4-on-3) in the second period and added a
short-handed goal at 3:37 of the third period to build a 5-1
lead. Wildcat center Matt Thurber talled the short-handed marker
and led his team with 1-2--3 for the night. LSSU lost Jean to a
game disqualification and Monardo to an injury during the second
period.
Freshman forward Buddy Robinson (4-3--7) scored the Lakers'
second goal of the game at 10:39 on assists from sophomore forward
Kellan Lain (8-5--13) and McParland.
At 14:28 of the third period, the Wildcats took a 6-2 lead with
a goal from Andrew Cherniwchan.
Sophomore netminder Kevin Kapalka (15-11-5-4) made 18 saves for
the Lakers while Jared Coreau totaled 26 saves for NMU. The Lakers
were 0-for-7 on the power-play, while NMU was 1-for-4.
LSSU and the Wildcats will be back in action Saturday starting a
7:35 p.m.
