Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Six players scored eight or more points for
the Grand Valley State women's basketball team, which utilized its
depth to beat Lake Superior State 69-56 on Thursday at Bud Cooper
Gymnasium.
LSSU (5-10 overall, 4-7 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) gave up the first six points of the second half to
fall behind 37-26, but fought within four points, 41-37, with 13:56
remaining. Lake Superior State stayed within reach until GVSU's
Kellie Watson converted a three-point play and grabbed a defensive
rebound that led to a three-pointer by Briauna Taylor for a 51-41
margin with 9:37 left.
LSSU forward Maria Blazejewski totaled 18 points and 11 rebounds
for her third double double of the season and first against a GLIAC
opponent. Sophomore guard Stephanie Fisher, making her sixth
appearance of the season, scored a career-high 14 points, and had
five assists and two blocked shots. Junior Raven Trammell
contributed nine points.
LSSU shot 42.9 percent from the field, including 5-of-16 from
three-point range, and made 9-of-13 free throws.
Taylor totaled 13 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four
steals to lead Grand Valley State (12-3 overall, 8-3 GLIAC). Meryl
Cripe followed with 11 points, and Watson had nine. GVSU shot 41.1
percent from the field, including 7-of-22 from behind the arc, and
made 16-of-21 free throws. GVSU out-rebounded LSSU, 37-29.
GVSU led at halftime, 31-26.
LSSU plays hots to Ferris State at 3 p.m. Saturday.
