Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Two days after wowing fans with a slam dunk
show, the Lake Superior State men's basketball team beat Tiffin
with its long-range game.
Alex Williams, Derek Billing and Rashaun Carroll were a combined
11-of-13 from three-point range as LSSU built a 51-28 first-half
command during Saturday's 85-71 victory over Tiffin. The
Lakers didn't maintain their school-record pace as
they went on to finish 14-of-20 from behind the arc, but they
shot a season-high 60.4 percent from the field while breezing to
the victory.
Williams, who scored a career-high 27 points during last
season's six-point victory over the Dragons, was 6-of-9 from
three-point range for the game and led the Lakers with 25 points,
three assists and two steals. For the week, the sophomore
guard averaged 23 points per game and shot 68 percent from the
field.
Carroll finished with 16 points, and Tony Harris and Derek
Billing added 11 each for the Lakers (7-4 overall, 5-3 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). Carroll and Harris both hit
season scoring highs. Derek Kinney finished with nine points, a
team-leading six rebounds, and four assists. Harris added four
steals.
LSSU was 20-of-31 from the field during the first half and
32-of-53 for the game. The Lakers made 7-of-11 free throws and
out-rebounded Tiffin, 34-27.
Mike Boan totaled 18 points and five rebounds to lead Tiffin
(5-8 overall, 2-6 GLIAC). Guard Joe Graessle, who scored 38 points
against LSSU last season, was limited to seven points.
Tiffin shot 41.7 percent from the field, including 5-of-17 from
three-point range, and made 16-of-23 free throws.
LSSU takes a five-game win streak into its Jan. 10 game at
Saginaw Valley State.
