Box Score 2 AURORA, Ill. - Lake Superior State opened the 2013 Mizuno
Crossover Volleyball Tournament Friday morning with a 3-2 victory
over William Jewell and finished off the day with a 3-1 victory
over Maryville.
The 13th-seeded Lakers (4-13) defeated the 14th-seeded Cardinals
(3-20) in a marathon match, 25-16, 24-26, 25-22, 27-29, 15-11.
William Jewell came back from a 20-18 deficit to win the fourth set
and tie the match, 2-2, but the Lakers led the fifth set from start
to finish.
Emily Snyder totaled 13 kills and 16 digs, and Chloe Balanda had
11 kills and three block assists to lead LSSU. Setter Janelle Nagy
compiled 36 assists, five blocks and six kills with a .375 attack
percentage. Meghan Drobish led the Lakers in digs with 39. She was
one of five Lakers in double figures in digs. Sydne McMullen added
five blocks, followed by Gaby Olsen with four.
Snyder totaled 15 kills, Jen Marren had 14 and Balanda nine as
the Lakers beat No. 16 seed Maryville (7-18), 25-18, 12-25, 27-25,
25-20. Snyder had an attack percentage of .387, while Nagy totaled
39 assists and five kills with a .500 attack rate. Drobish finished
with 17 digs, and Justice Kjolhede followed with 10. Nagy and
McMullen combined to total five solo blocks.
Nagy served three straight aces to help LSSU battle back from a
23-18 deficit during the pivotal third set. Balanda tied it 25-25
with a kill, and the Lakers closed out the set thanks to
back-to-back Maryville errors.
Snyder had two kills, and Nagy and Balanda had one each as LSSU
scored five straight points to pull away from an 8-7 lead during
the fourth set. The Lakers ended the match on successive kills by
Marren, McMullen and Snyder.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference vs. Great
Lakes Valley Conference Crossover Tournament is in its sixth year
and is the nation's largest collegiate volleyball tournament.
