Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State made three-pointers when
they had to and out-scored Hillsdale 13-0 in points off turnovers
during the second half to beat the Chargers 89-80 in men's
basketball Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
It was the Lakers' (7-1 overall, 1-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference) first victory over Hillsdale (2-2 overall, 0-2
GLIAC) since Dec. 3, 2009.
Hillsdale made 7-of-12 three-point attempts and shot a
blistering 60.7 percent from the field during the first half to
lead 44-38. On two occasions, the Chargers were up by 11.
Derek Billing, who led all scorers with 29 points, made two
three-pointers and Alex Williams dunked after a steal by Cameron
Metz during an 8-0 run that cut Hillsdale's lead to one point,
49-48, early in the second half.
Williams canned back-to-back three-pointers at 15:00 and 13:57
to give the Lakers their first lead of the period, 58-55. Billing
nailed another one at 13:21 to make it 61-55.
LSSU inched ahead to nine points with 7:07 remaining and built
its biggest lead of the game, 11 points, after Devin Daly made two
free throws with 35 seconds to go.
Billing was 5-of-11 from three-point range for the game and
4-of-8 during the second half. He also had six assists and two
steals.
Williams scored 24 points and had two steals, and Metz totaled
12 points and two blocked shots. Metz and Jake Blake led the Lakers
in rebounds with nine each.
LSSU shot 46.9 percent from the field, including 10-of-27 from
three-point range, and made 19-of-25 free throws. The Lakers
out-rebounded Hillsdale, 38-32.
Anthony Manno scored 24 points and Tim Dezelski 23 to lead
Hillsdale. Dezelski led the Chargers in rebounds with eight and had
three blocked shots. Hillsdale shot 50.9 percent from the field,
including 13-of-26 from behind the arc, and made 13-of-19 free
throws.
LSSU plays at Malone on Thursday.
