Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Northwood out-scored Lake Superior State 14-2
off turnovers to build a 13-point first-half lead and went on to
beat the Laker women's basketball team 75-66 Saturday at Bud Cooper
Gymnasium.
The Timberwolves (11-12 overall, 9-8 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference) avenged a Jan. 12 five-point home loss to
LSSU, during which they shot 21.5 percent from the field. This
time, they shot 41.9 percent and limited LSSU to 17 field
goals.
Lake Superior State (5-16 overall, 4-13 GLIAC) trimmed an
18-point second-half deficit to six points, 58-52, with 8:42
remaining. NU's Jordyn Nurenberg made back-to-back layups and added
two free throws during a 1:11 span to regain a double-figure lead
for the Timberwolves. Northwood extended the lead to 13 points,
67-54, with 3:58 to go. The Lakers cut it to eight with 38 seconds
remaining.
Maria Blazejewski led LSSU with 27 points and nine rebounds. She
was 14-of-15 at the free-throw line. Taylor Greene added nine
points and three assists. The Lakers shot 34.7 percent from the
field, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, and made 28-of-32
free throws.
Lauren Robak and Nurenberg scored 14 points each to lead
Northwood. Kaitlin Susan and Rachel Church added 10 points each. NU
was 5-of-20 from behind the arc and 18-of-26 at the free-throw
line. The Timberwolves out-rebounded LSSU, 40-35.
LSSU begins a four-game road stretch on Feb. 14 at Grand Valley
State.
