Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. – Lake Superior State was defeated by
Northern Michigan Friday at the Barry Events Center, 3-1. The
Lakers still lead the Father Cappo Cup total-goals
series 7-4 heading into Saturday's contest.
As of release time, the Lakers and Wildcats are tied for
eighth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association with 32
points each. The Lakers are 15-19-1 overall and 10-16-1-1 in the
CCHA, while the Wildcats are 15-16-4 overall and 9-14-4-1 in the
CCHA.
The Lakers fell behind early in the game when the Wildcats
netted a goal at 13:40 of the first period. NMU
maintained a 1-0 lead through the second period of play before
scoring the game-winning goal at 1:59 of the third period.
Erik Higby netted the game winner for NMU and recorded two
assists. The last NMU goal came at the 17-minute mark of the third
from Matt Thurber.
Lake State's only goal of the night was scored by freshman
forward Bryce Schmitt (3-2—5). Schmitt scored a short-handed
goal for LSSU, his first of the season, from junior defenseman
Andrew Perrault (1-13—14).
Junior goaltender Kevin Kapalka (6-8-1) made 36 in the
loss. NMU's Jared Coreau recorded the win, making 50 saves
for the Wildcats.
LSSU was 0-for-2 on the power-play and held NMU to 1-for-4.
