Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- Lake Superior State skated to a 1-0 victory
over host Alabama-Huntsville on Friday night. The victory marked
the Lakers' second straight victory on the season, improving their
record to 2-9 overall and 2-5 in Western Collegiate Hockey
Association play.
The Lakers were propelled by freshman goaltender Gordon
Defiel, making his ninth career start and slamming the door on
all 26 shots faced to register his first collegiate shutout.
Defiel, the only Laker goaltender to register a win this season,
moved to a 2-7 overall record. He now boasts a 3.02 goals-against
average and a .916 save percentage.
Defiel secured the Lakers' first shutout since Kevin Kapalka
blanked Bowling Green State on March 8, 2013.
Junior forward Bryce Schmitt (4-2--6) scored the game's lone goal on a
power play with 7:28 remaining in the second period. Freshmen blue
line partners James Roll (0-3--3) and Jason
Bird (1-1--2) combined on the assists for the game winning
tally. The goal also marks the second consecutive game-winning goal
for Schmitt, who also scored the overtime goal at Anchorage on Nov.

Coincidentally, Schmitt also tallied one of the Lakers' two
goals during their last shutout victory in 2012-13.
In net for the Chargers was Carmine Guerriero who has had an
exceptional beginning to the season, posting a 2.31 goals against
average with a .940 save percentage. Gurriero was up for the task
against the Lakers, turning away 33 shots while allowing the single
goal.
The Lakers seek their first sweep on the season and first since
Feb. 21-22, 2014, at UAH. Saturday's game is once again scheduled
for 8:07 pm ET and can be viewed on wcha.tv and 99.5 YES FM will
