Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - No. 20 Lake Superior State avenged another of
its three losses by beating Grand Valley State 89-69 Thursday at
Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
The Lakers (23-3 overall, 15-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference), who committed a season-high 20 turnovers
during a five-point loss at GVSU on Jan. 23, limited its turnovers
to 10 during the rematch. LSSU also maintained an impressive
inside-outside combination throughout the game and dominated inside
once Grand Valley State's dominant inside player got into foul
trouble.
Senior center Cameron Metz led LSSU with 29 points and five
assists and surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring milestone. He
has 1,009 points heading into Saturday's home game against Ferris
State.
Metz and junior post player Jake Blake connected at-will during
the second half. Blake finished with eight points and five assists.
Metz scored 23 points and Blake six during the second half.
Junior guard Tony Harris got the Lakers off to a blazing 20-10
start by hitting three three-pointers and adding a layup during the
opening seven minutes. LSSU led 25-10 after Jordan Dasuqi converted
a three-point play with 11:24 remaining.
Grand Valley State (15-7 overall, 11-7 GLIAC) closed the gap to
41-39 by halftime. Lake Superior State enjoyed a double-digit lead
throughout most of the final 10 minutes of the game.
Harris finished with 18 points and five assists, and Derek
Billing scored 14 points for LSSU. They were a combined 8-of-11
from three-point range. Alex Williams led the Lakers defensively
with three steals and totaled 10 points, a team-leading eight
rebounds and four assists.
LSSU shot 50 percent from the field, including 10-of-21 from
three-point range, and made 17-of-19 free throws.
Rob Woodson scored 12 points and Darren Washington 10 to lead
GVSU. Trevin Alexander and Woodson combined for 15 rebounds as
Grand Valley State led on the boards, 36-29. GVSU shot 45.5 percent
from the field, including 3-of-12 from behind the arc, and made
16-of-27 free throws.
LSSU and FSU meet at 3 p.m. Saturday.
