Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State and Ferris State were
both 0-1 in overtime contests this season heading into Saturday's
women's basketball showdown at Bud Cooper Gym. The Bulldogs evened
that record by winning a double-overtime marathon against the
Lakers, 72-68.
The game was tied 55-55 at the end of regulation after a second
half that included eight lead changes. FSU's Sarah DeShone made a
layup at the buzzer to end the first overtime in a 62-62
deadlock.
DeShone, who ranks fourth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference in scoring, was also the key factor during the
final 30 seconds of the second overtime, making a layup and two
free throws during a pivotal 6-0 run.
The Bulldogs' standout senior led her team with 19 points, five
rebounds and four assists, while Christina Branch finished with 11
points and 15 rewbounds. Katie Mavis came off the bench and scored
17 points.
Stephanie Fisher led LSSU (5-20 overall, 5-14 GLIAC) with 19
points, but was limited to seven points after halftime. April
LaCross scored 12 points, Kelsey Ance 11 and Kandace Crittendon
10.
Alex Morrow led Lake Superior State in rebounds with eight,
while Megan Manninen totaled eight assists. Crittendon totaled
seven rebounds.
LSSU shot 34.3 percent from the field for the game, including
8-of-25 from behind the arc, and made 14-of-24 free throws.
Ferris State (7-13 overall, 7-11 GLIAC) shot 31.1 percent from
the field, including 4-of-13 from three-point range, and made
22-of-32 free throws. The Bulldogs out-rebounded LSSU, 58-47.
LSSU plays host to Northern Michigan at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
