Box Score ALLENDALE - Four players scored in double figures for the Lake
Superior State men's basketball team, which defeated Grand Valley
State 78-75 Thursday to win Round 1 of its first Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division road trip.
Round 2 is Saturday at undefeated Ferris State (15-2 overall,
11-0 GLIAC).
Forwards Jake Blake and Devin Daly scored career-highs of 17
points each, and guard/forward Alex Williams added 15 points to
lead LSSU (14-3 overall, 9-2 GLIAC), who received votes in this
week's NABC Division II Top 25 Poll and are ranked eighth in the
Midwest Region Media Poll.
Williams and Blake were a combined 7-of-13 as LSSU made 10-of-29
three-point attemps. Guard Tony Harris added 11 points.
Blake has been the difference maker for Lake Superior State
lately. The 6-5, 205-pound senior averages 6.6 points per game, but
has contributed 9.2 ppg during his last five outings. Daly is the
team's No. 2 scorer behind Williams, averaging 10.9 ppg.
Blake scored 10 first-half points as GVSU (9-8 overall, 5-6
GLIAC) overcame a late five-point deficit to lead 32-29 at
halftime.
Five minutes into the second half, Harris made two free throws
and a layup, and Williams hit a three-pointer for 48-42 LSSU lead.
LSSU extended the lead to nine points, 66-57, with 6:06 remaining
and controlled most of the final stretch. GVSU out-scored LSSU 7-1
during the final 13 seconds.
Luke Ryskamp scored 20 points and Darren Kapustka added 13 to
lead GVSU, which also landed four scorers in double figures. GVSU
shot 44.6 percent from the field, including 4-of-11 from
three-point range, and made 21-of-27 free throws. GVSU
out-rebounded LSSU, 45-34.
LSSU shot 39 percent from the field and made 22-of-34 free
throws. Lake State committed only 10 turnovers to GVSU's 18.
