Lakers score at a blistering pace to beat USI

Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Lake Superior State hopes the adage "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" doesn't ring true for the men's basketball team.

As the Lakers opened their season with back-to-back wins at the Las Vegas Showdown, their entire starting lineup scored nine or more points in both games. Sophomore guard Akaemji Williams, the only starter to fall short of reaching double figures in both games, followed Friday's nine-point effort with 24 points during Saturday's 91-73 victory over Southern Indiana.

Williams and senior forward Devin Daly combined for 50 points against the Screaming Eagles. Daly averaged 24 points and 10.5 rebounds for the weekend after compiling 26 points and eight rebounds against USI (1-1).

Lake Superior State trailed 17-10 with 12:42 remaining in the first half and was still down by seven points with 8:28 to go. Williams scored the Lakers' next 12 points to tie it, 32-32, with 4:48 remaining. Williams and Daly combined for 30 points as LSSU led 45-39 at halftime.

Jordan Dasuqi made two three-pointers and Daly one as LSSU opened the second half with a 17-0 run during a 3 1/2 minute span. Carson Manger and Mike Nicholson added four points each during the run. Southern Indiana closed the gap to 12 points with 9 1/2 minutes left, but LSSU answered the Screaming Eagles the rest of the way.

Nicholson, Manger and Dasuqi all finished with 10 points. Nicholson also turned in eight rebounds and five blocks. Daly and Williams combined to total 14 rebounds.

LSSU shot 48.4 percent from the field, including 12-of-27 from three-point range. The Lakers made 17-of-23 free throws and out-scored USI 24-6 in points off turnovers. They out-rebounded USI 37-33.

Alex Stein scored 19 points to lead Southern Indiana, which shot 44.4 percent from the field, including 8-of-21 from behind the arc. The Screaming Eagles made 17-of-24 free throws. USI defeated Findlay 88-80 Friday.

For the weekend, LSSU held a 42-19 command in points off turnovers.

The Lakers continue their non-conference stretch against Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents Nov. 21 at Indianapolis.
