Lakers fall to Prairie Stars 60-45 in weekend finale

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State fell 60-45 to Illinois-Springfield in the second day of the women's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference versus Great Lakes Valley Conference Challenge held in Lebanon, Ill.

The Lakers (0-2, 0-0 GLIAC) were led by Tamara Novic's 12 points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes of play. Novic also tallied a pair of assists as a reserve center.

Cold shooting doomed the Lakers throughout the game, specifically from behind the arc. The Lakers shot 4-24 from behind the arc (16.7 percent), including 1-7 from behind the line during the first quarter as the Lakers were outscored 20-9.

During the first and fourth quarters, the only frames the Lakers were outscored, they went 1-12 combined from three-point range.

Valerie Meissner was the only other Laker to reach double digits in scoring; pouring in 11 points. The freshman from Colgate, Wisc. also dished out three assists and hauled in three rebounds.

Ashley McHenry led the Prairie Stars in scoring with 17 points, going 8-11 from the field. McHenry also collected five rebounds.

The Lakers return to Cooper Gymnasium next weekend to host the Super 8 Hotel Classic in Sault Ste. Marie. Minot State and Minnesota-Duluth will be the Lakers' opponents during the weekend tournament with Northern Michigan also playing the pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams.
