Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - In convincing fashion, the Lake Superior State Lakers trounced their border-town rival Algoma University (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) 84-56 on Tuesday night. Senior forward Devin Daly ensured there would be little doubt of the outcome while collecting a double-double against the visiting Thunderbirds.
Daly, a native of Mahogany Heights, Belize, collected a game-high 22 points (8-for-13 from the field) and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Sophomore point guard Akaemji Williams produced 18 points for the Lakers, continuing his impressive scoring ability to start the season. Williams went 6-for-13 from the field and also hit six of seven free throws.
The game got off to a slow start, with the victorious Lakers (3-1) able to open the scoring with Daly's bucket, 1:30 into the game.
A monsterous dunk by Daly, set up by a Josh Goldschmitt rebound and outlet pass, started a 7-0 run late in the first half that helped the Lakers take a 43-29 lead into the break.
Consistent offensive production throughout the lineup in the second half and a sound defense ensured the 28-point victory for coach Steve Hettinga and his Lakers.
Starting guard Carson Manger and reserve Carlos Eubanks collected 10 points each,
Mike Nicholson was a dominating force on the glass, matching Daly's 11 boards in just 24 minutes of play.
The Lakers will return to the hardwood inside Cooper Gymnasium on Dec. 3 against the Findlay Oilers to open conference play. The Lakers will then host Wayne State for their second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Dec. 5.
