Lakers cap holiday tournament with 69-64 loss to Florida Southern

LAKELAND, FLA. - Lake Superior State women's basketball capped the Florida Southern/Terrace Hotel Holiday Classic with a 69-64 loss against tournament host Florida Southern College on Friday.

The Lakers (2-8, 0-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) built a 37-33 first half lead by shooting 56 percent (14-of-25) from the field and hit 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) shots from behind the three point line.

LSSU was led by reserve center Tamara Novic's second-consecutive game with 20 points. Novic also tied for a game-high five rebounds with April LaCross, who netted 15 points off the bench.

Despite the first half lead, the Lakers once again let the third quarter go to their opponents. The Moccasins (10-1) outscored LSSU 18-10 in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

The Lakers committed nine second half turnovers and shot 18.2 percent (2-11) from three point range in the final 20 minutes.

Forward Mariah Harris led FSC with 14 points and six rebounds.

Junior guard Mackenzie Edwards poured in 11 of her 18 total points during the second half.

The Lakers committed 15 total turnovers, compared to nine for the Moccasins, and gave up 19 points to FSC on turnovers.

LSSU was also whistled for 24 personal fouls, while FSC was called for 16.

The Lakers will resume GLIAC play on Jan. 2 with a 1:00 p.m. start against Lake Erie College at Cooper Gymnasium.
