Lakers topped by Grand Valley

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State women's basketball fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Grand Valley State on Thursday evening, 71-49.

The Lakers (3-14, 2-9 GLIAC) jumped out to an 8-to-0 run to open the game with all four of starting guard Valerie Meissner's points on the night coming during the three-and-a-half minute opening stretch.

The fortunes for LSSU quickly evaporated as the GVSU Lakers (13-4, 8-3 GLIAC) answered back with an 14-to-3 run to take a 14-11 lead into the first break. GVSU never looked back and using a 14-to-4 run to open the second quater and eventually widening the gap to  36-19 at half.

Mackenzie Edwards, a junior guard from Gaylord, Mich., scored a game-high 21 points and surpassed the 500-point career total mark at LSSU. Edwards also led the Lakers with six rebounds and drew her career total to 193 at LSSU.

Beyond the performance by Edwards, the LSSU offense sputtered in the face of the GLIAC's top defense. GVSU held the Lakers to a respectable 47.6 pecent from the floor but limited LSSU to 2-of-14 (14.3 percent) from behind the three point line. LSSU also committed 17 turnovers in the game.

Piper Tucker led GVSU scorers with 16 points and was complimented by fellow starter Bailey Cairnduff's 13 points and 12 points from Lindsay Baker off of the bench.

LSSU hosts Ferris State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
