No. 13 Lakers upset by Ohio Dominican on the road

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A nine-game winning streak, including six-straight conference victories, for No. 13 Lake Superior State men's basketball came to an end on Thursday night following a road loss to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division member Ohio Dominican. The 87-75 upset follows perhaps the Lakers' (11-2, 6-1 GLIAC) most important win of the season, a victory over then No. 13 Ashland last Sunday.

Devin Daly picked up his eighth double-double of the season after tying Chad Nelson of ODU with a game-high 26 points. Daly also picked up a career-high 15 rebounds, with nine coming in the first half of play.

The Panthers (4-9, 1-6 GLIAC) built a 10 point first half lead, due in large part to Nelson scoring 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 4-for-6 behind the three point line.

ODU hit 51.9 percent (14-27) from the field and 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) from behind the arc in the first half while the Lakers were held in check, hitting 33.3 percent (10-for-30) from the field and just 28.6 (4-for-14) from deep.

Coach Steve Hettinga's squad showed their mettle early in the second half to come storming back and eventually taking a 59-57 lead with 7:48 remaining in the game following a made jumper from sophomore guard Akaemji Williams.

Williams finished with 14 points, four rebounds, and four assists in a full 40 minutes of action.

Daly and freshman Carson Manger helped spark the second half comeback for the Lakers. Daly scored 14 points and hauled in six rebounds while Manger scored all 11 of his points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field during the final 20 minutes.

Reserve center Mike Smutny gave the Lakers six points by hitting 2-of-5 three pointers during seven minutes of relief of starter Mike Nicholson who got into foul trouble late in the game.

Nicholson tallied nine points and four rebounds but was limited to 11 minutes of action due to four personal fouls.

With 2:41 remaining in the second half, Daly put his side up 68-67 after hitting 1-of-2 free throws but a foul moments later on the other end sent Trent Weaver to the line with a chance to regain the lead for the Panthers. Weaver knocked down both free throws, giving him 16 points and ODU a one-point lead.

Weaver finished with 18 points and recorded 15 rebounds.

On the ensuing in-bound play the Panthers trapped the Lakers and created a steal that led to a three pointer from the corner from Conner Dahn to put ODU up 72-68. Dahn scored 16 points and recorded 9 rebounds in 28 minutes of time off of the bench.

After Daly hit a three in response and bringing the margine back to one, Ronnie Williams hit a three to put the Panthers back up by four points with 1:39 remaining.

Manger hit a three with 20 seconds remaining to give the Lakers their first made shot from the floor and just their fourth point following Daly's three with 2:11 remaining.

ODU closed out the game with a 15-to-4 run in large thanks to late free throws as a result of the Lakers fouling to try to extend the game.

LSSU takes on Tiffin at 3 p.m. on Saturday as they look to get back on track. The Lakers are now tied with Saginaw Valley State at 6-1 atop the GLIAC North Division standings following the Cardinals' 89-83 overtime victory at Findlay on Thursday night.
