Lakers fall to Panthers 75-51

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Lake Superior State women's basketball fell to Ohio Dominican 75-51 Thursday evening in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest held in Alumni Hall on the campus of ODU.

The Lakers (3-10, 2-5 GLIAC) trailed by nine points at halftime, due in part to hot shooting from the Panthers (9-4, 4-3 GLIAC) during the first half. ODU shot 59.3 (16-27) percent from the field including hitting 2-of-4 shots from behind the three point line.

LSSU shot 40.9 percent (9-22) from the field during the first half and were unable to find their shot from deep, only connecting on 3-of-12 three-point attempts.

The Panthers extended their lead to 20 points after outscoring the Lakers 19-8 in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach.

Mackenzie Edwards scored a game-high 19 points for the Lakers and also collected a team-leading five rebounds in 31 minutes of work.

Freshman center Rachel Novotny scored nine points on 3-of-4 field goal shooting and went 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.

Another freshman for the Lakers, Alexis Rowe, scored six points, all from the free-throw line, in 21 minutes to lead the bench scorers for LSSU.

Kayla Cook led the Panthers with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 1-for-2 from behind the arc. Cook, who played 11 minutes of reserve action, also hit both free throws she attempted in the game.

Melissa Scherpenberg led ODU starters with 12 points and produced a game-high eight rebounds.

LSSU will face Tiffin at 1 p.m. on Saturday to cap the weekend.
