Lakers drop pair of 3-0 matches on Friday at Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover

AURORA, Ill.- Lake Superior State volleyball fell in straight sets during a pair of tightly contested matches against William Jewell College during Friday's opening session, and Bellarmine in the evening, at the Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover event in Aurora, Ill.

Match 1: WJC 3 - LSSU 0 (25-19, 25-20, 26-24)

The Lakers (1-18) fell 25-19 and 25-20 during the first two sets before losing in extra points during the third and final set, 26-24. LSSU players combined for 35 kills on the match and were led by Brooke Williams with eight kills, followed by Jena Tulgestke and Karlee Weissend each chipping in seven kills.

Lauren Lukasik and Madison Castle tied with a team-high 13 assists and Justice Kjolhede once again led the Lakers' back end with 20 digs.

Freshman Amanda Reid scored six kills and also produced 14 digs defensively.

Leading the Cardinals (10-10) attack was Leslie Booth with 12 kills and Paige Cunningham with 11 kills. WJC racked up 45 total kills on 140 attempts and scored three solo blocks and seven assisted blocks. Booth also had a solo block and assisted on a pair of blocks, as well, for 14 total points. Cunningham scored 13 points by also adding four assisted blocks. 

Alix Wigel led WJC setters with 19 assists.

Match 2: BU 3 - LSSU 0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-19)

In Friday's third session, the Lakers' second match of the day, LSSU fell 3-0 against Bellarmine University. 

The Knights (13-7) featured a strong attack that doubled the Lakers in kills, 50-25. Both teams committed 17 attack errors in the match, however the BU attack percentage of .268 was too strong for LSSU, which totaled just .070 on the attack.

Freshman Caitlyn Kane led the way for LSSU with six kills and had an impressive .312 attack percentage to lead the Lakers. Reid followed Kane with five kills and contribute nine digs.

Bridget Guinane led the way for Bellarmine with a match-high nine kills and also led the match with three solo blocks.

The Lakers conclude play at the Midwest Region Crossover on Saturday with a 2 p.m. ET match against Malone.
