Lake Erie notches season bests to beat LSSU women

SAULT STE. MARIE – Lake Erie took advantage of a quiet night in Cooper Gymnasium Thursday and put together a dominating performance for an 81-62 women's basketball victory over Lake Superior State.

The few fans who braved Sault Ste. Marie's winter blast watched Kayla Gabor score a season-high 30 points to lead Lake Erie (3-7 overall, 1-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). The Storm also posted season bests in field-goal percentage (49.2), three-point field goals (12) and turnovers (six).

Lake Erie fell behind early, 4-2, then pressed to force nine Lake State first-quarter turnovers. The Storm led 17-12 at the end of the opening period and 32-26 at halftime. They shot 63 percent (19-of-30) to control the second half.

Tamara Novic totaled 13 points and six rebounds, and Claire Radtke added 11 points to lead Lake Superior State (2-8 overall, 1-3 GLIAC). Rachel Novotny and Lexie Khon combined to total 12 points and 18 rebounds.

LSSU shot 45.1 percent from the field, including 6-of-22 from three-point range, and made 10-of-16 free throws. The Lakers out-rebounded the Storm, 46-20.

Christine Dawson added 15 points and six rebounds for Lake Erie, which landed four scorers in double figures.

The Lakers play host to Walsh at 1 p.m. Saturday.
