Box Score MIDLAND, Mich. – In a thrilling overtime finish Lake Superior State men's basketball fell just short against Northwood, 112-111 on the road Monday night in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Senior Devin Daly finished with a career-high 49 points on 14-of-18 shooting from the floor, including 7-for-9 from beyond the three-point line to lead the Lakers (15-6, 10-5 GLIAC). Daly's output set the GLIAC regular season record for the most points scored in a single game and fell just shy of Ron Sober's LSSU record of 54 points in a game, set in 1966.
The forward from Mahogany Heights Belize also doled out six assists and recorded five rebounds on the defensive end and now sits 17 points shy of reaching the career 1,000-point club.
Leading the Timberwolves (11-10, 7-8 GLIAC) and keeping their hopes of reaching the GLIAC Tournament alive, Maurice Jones scored 41 points, dished out seven assists, and recorded five rebounds despite suffering an injury late in the second half. Jones returned to play and helped close out the upset victory.
The Lakers cut a 10-point halftime deficit and eventually captured the lead with 27 seconds remaining in regulation with a layup by Michael Nicholson assisted by Daly. Nicholson netted 10 of his 12 total points during the final six minutes of the contest and along with Daly helped will the Lakers back into the game late. Nicholson also hauled in a career-high 13 rebounds to complete the double-double.
Following the made layup by Nicholson, guard Akaemji Williams committed his fifth personal foul on Jones who would go to the line and miss a pair of free throws that could have given Northwood the lead.
Williams finished with 19 points, six assists and three steals.
With 15 seconds remaining, Jordan Dasuqi then put the Lakers up three with a pair of made free throws. Dasuqi finished with 13 points.
On the ensuing possession for the Timberwolves, Jermaine Myers tied the game with six seconds remaining to force overtime.
Northwood jumped out to a 6-0 run in overtime before the Lakers came storming back and eventually drawing within a single point of the tie after a clutch three pointer by Dasuqi with 11 seconds remaining in overtime. The Lakers fouled Myers on the next possession and the guard knocked down both free throws to go up 110-107 with nine seconds remaining.
Instead of leaving the Laker shooters with a chance to tie the game and force and second overtime the T-wolves decided to foul Daly and send him to the line with five seconds left on the clock. Daly hit the front end of his two attempts before purposely missing the second in hopes of getting a tip-in that would tie the game.
Jones, still hobbled by the injury incurred during the second half, snagged the rebound and iced the game at the other end with a pair of made free throws.
The Lakers finished with strong shooting numbers of 52.9 percent from the field (36-68) and 45.5 percent from behind the arc (15-33).
The Timberwolves bench, led by Dylan Langkabel's 10 points in 22 minutes of reserve duty, outscored the LSSU bench 30-11.
The Lakers return to Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Thursday evening to take on Saginaw Valley State at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday the Lakers will host the LSSU Basketball Alumni Reunion and honor the 1995-96 GLIAC Tournament Championship team during halftime of their game against Hillsdale. Tip-off for Saturday's game is slated for 3 p.m.
