Sluggish first half dooms the Lakers against MTU women

HOUGHTON - Lake Superior State Women's basketball concluded their final road game of the season with a 79-52 loss against Michigan Tech on Saturday. The victory moves the Huskies into a tie for first place of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division with Saginaw Valley State, who host Ferris State later Saturday evening.

The Huskies (18-7, 16-5 GLIAC) received 20-point performances by starting forwards Danielle Blake and Kylie Moxley. Blake also contributed six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

16 of Moxley's points and 14 of Blake's output were scored during a first half in which the Huskies outscored the Lakers (5-22, 4-17 GLIAC) 43-13.

To their credit, the Lakers did find life in the second half and would outscore the Huskies 39-35 behind a 48.3 field goal percentage for the half, but the game was already out of reach.

Senior guard Megan Manninen scored a season-high and matched a career-high with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor to lead the Lakers. Manninen, a native of Ishpeming and playing in her final game against the Upper Peninsula rivals, also matched a season-high three shots made from behind the arc.

Starters Rachel Novotny and Mackenzie Edwards eached chipped in nine points, while freshman reserve guard Courtney Jacobsen scored 10 points for LSSU.

The road defeat leaves the Lakers with a record of 0-13 away from home for the 2015-16 season.

LSSU closes the season with a home game against Northwood at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Lakers will honor their three seniors April LaCross, Katie Wollan and Manninen with a special presentation between the women's and men's game scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
