GVSU women shut down Lakers

SAULT STE. MARIE – Grand Valley State bounced back from its eight-point loss at Northwood with a 74-46 victory over Lake Superior State Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

GVSU (11-4 overall, 6-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) was 29-of-67 from the field to reach its second-highest field goal total of the season. GVSU also held LSSU (4-12 overall, 2-7 GLIAC) to a season-low 15 field goals.

Grand Valley State, which is tied for second place in the GLIAC North Division, put the game out of reach early, building a 20-3 first-quarter lead and extending it to 33-12 at halftime. Taylor Lutz scored 14 points to lead four double-figure scorers for GVSU.

The GVSU Lakers made 9-of-29 three-point field goals and 7-of-10 free throws. They out-scored LSSU 28-7 in points off turnovers.

Claire Radtke scored 13 points, and Mackenzie Edwards added 10 points and nine rebounds to lead LSSU. Lake Superior State shot 15-of-46 from the field, including 8-of-20 from three-point range, and made 8-of-9 free throws. The LSSU Lakers out-rebounded GVSU, 39-31.

LSSU plays Thursday at Northern Michigan.
