Huskies outlast LSSU, 67-60

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State women's basketball fell, 67-60, against Upper Peninsula rivals, Michigan Tech, on Saturday in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.

Senior guard Mackenzie Edwards propelled the Lakers (4-19, 2-14 GLIAC) to a first-half tie with the Huskies (15-6, 11-5 GLIAC)on five-of-seven shooting from the field and a 4-4 mark from three-point range for 17 points.  Edwards finished with a game-high 26 points and now ranks 20th all-time in LSSU women's basketball scoring with 1,030 career points.

Out of the halftime break, the Huskies outscored the Lakers 18-8 in the third quarter to take a 10-point lead into the final 10 minutes.

Both teams shot well in the fourth quarter, with the Lakers hitting 8-for-11 from the field (72.7 percent). Edwards shot a perfect 2-for-2 from the floor, including hitting her only three-point attempt and made both free throws for a high of seven points.

The Huskies opened the fourth quarter leading by double-digits until the 5:25 mark when freshman Lexie Khon hit a free throw to make it a 57-48 game. Under a minute later, sophomore Rachel Novotny hit a jumper to draw the Lakers to within seven points with 4:39 remaining.

With 3:06 remaining, Tamara Novic received a feed from Valerie Meissner in the post and drew the Lakers to within five points with a strong layup to give her nine points to lead the LSSU bench.

With 10 seconds remaining, Novotny brought the Lakers back to within five points of the Huskies, but Kelli Guy converted the free throw attempts on the other end to keep LSSU at bay.

The Lakers finished 51.1 percent (24-47) from the field and hit five-of-11 (45.5 percent) three-pointers attempted.

Next week, the Lakers travel to Ferris State at 6 p.m. on Thursday and face Grand Valley State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
