Lakers Drop GLIAC Game at Wayne State

DETROIT – Lake Superior State women's basketball suffered a 73-59 setback to Wayne State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference play on Saturday at the Matthaei Center in Detroit.

Lake State (3-4, 0-2 GLIAC) fell behind Wayne State (3-4, 1-1 GLIAC) 23-11 in the first quarter as the Lakers were outscored 17-7 over the final 7:20 of the period. In the second quarter, the Lakers fought back – outscoring the Warriors 21-15 to cut the deficit to six points with the score 38-32 at halftime. 

After halftime, the Lakers outscored the Warriors 16-14 in the third quarter and pulled within two points with the score 50-48 with under a minute remaining in the period. The Warriors scored the final two points of the quarter to make the score 52-48 going into the final quarter. Lake State pulled to within one point of Wayne State as the score was 52-51 with 9:47 remaining in the fourth quarter. However, the Lakers were outscored 21-8 the rest of the way to make the final score 73-59 in favor of Wayne State.

Lake Superior State was led in points by junior forward Lexie Khon and sophomore guard Jenna Gregory with 12 points each. Khon shot 5-of-11 from the field and Gregory made 4-of-7. Gregory added four assists, three rebounds and a steal. Junior guard Claire Radtke tallied nine points and five rebounds for the Lakers.

Wayne State's Ja'Nae Williams scored a game-high 18 points and garnered 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Lake State shot 42.9 percent from the field and 34.8 percent on three-point shots, while Wayne State made 43.3 percent of its shots, including 47.1 percent from behind the arc.

The Lakers made 9-of-10 free throw attempts and the Warriors converted 13-of-18 from the foul line.

The Lakers return to the court for their first home game of the season against Saginaw Valley State at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
