LSSU Volleyball Splits Final Day of Wildcat Open

SAULT STE. MARIE. --The Lake Superior State volleyball team picked up its first win of the season against Bemidji State in the final game of Northern Michigan's Wildcat Open.

The Lakers opened day two with a loss after falling in straight sets to No.1 ranked Minnesota Duluth (25-11, 25-16, 25-20). In the second game, LSSU battled it out with Bemidji State, who took the first set 25-19. Lake State responded with two consecutive set wins (25-18, 25-21). The Beavers took the fourth set 25-20, and LSSU captured the win after taking the final set 15-8.

Game 1:
Freshman middle blocker Camdyn Odykirk led the Lakers offense with seven kills. Junior Amanda Reid and sophomore Sarah Bailey were both close behind, each tallying six of the team's 26 total.

Leading the team in hitting percentage was freshman middle hitter Bethany Wilson, hitting .750. Senior setter Lauren Lukasik had the next-best hitting percentage with .333 and led the team with 13 assists.

Senior libero Paige Gotham held down the defense with 15 digs, while Reid notched six.

The Bulldogs were led by Makenzie Morgan's 11 kills. Keena Seiffert topped their squad defensively, tallying 14 digs.

LSSU posted a .051 hitting percentage while Minnesota finished with .308.

Game 2:
The Lakers were led offensively in game two by Reid, who notched 16 kills. Odykirk was second with nine.

Freshman Peyton Vandegrift had a match-high hitting percentage of .667 and sophomore Kyra Vezina was close behind with .600.

In addition to her offensive output, Reid also led the defense with 12 digs. Abby Beachnau, Paige Gotham and Mikala Williams each tallied 11.

Lukasik had 28 assists, while freshman Halle Grulke had eight.

Bemidji State's offense was led by Anna Averkamp's 14 kills. Emma Hallman posted 12 digs.

LSSU finished with a hitting percentage of .189 and Bemidji State's final was .212.

The Lakers will open their home and conference schedule on Sept. 7 with a matchup against Northern Michigan at 6:30 p.m.
