Laker Volleyball Falls to Ferris State on Monday

Box Score

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lake Superior State volleyball program (4-21, 3-11 GLIAC) fell on the road to the Ferris State Bulldogs (17-9, 12-2 GLIAC) by a score of 3-0 on Monday.

Both teams would battle early in the match as a kill from Taylor Fleming (Rogers City, Mich.) tied up the set at 6-6. The Bulldogs were able to pull out ahead with a pair of 3-0 runs, but the Lakers utilized a pair of runs of their own as a service ace from Sydney Briney (St. Joseph, Mich.) and a sneaky kill from reigning Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Setter of the Week Emily Kalinowski (South Lyon, Mich.) cut the lead back down to two. However, despite back-to-back aces from Ally Lasley (Birch Run, Mich.) the Bulldogs held on to take the first set by a score of 25-20.

The second set would once again start out back and forth, but this time, it was the Lakers that claimed the early lead as kills from Jordyn Haller (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) and Emilee McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.) propelled them to a 5-1 run. However, the Bulldogs would use multiple 4-1 runs to take the lead and pull out ahead by as many as four points, and despite a late rally featuring multiple kills from Maggie Morris (Schoolcraft, Mich.), Ferris State would secure the point they needed to narrowly claim the set by a score of 25-23.

Both teams traded several points early in the third set, but the Bulldogs were able to hold on to a slim lead. A kill from Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) pulled the Lakers to within two, but the Bulldogs would use runs of 4-1 and 4-0 to pull ahead. The Lakers would try to rally with kills from Morris and Fleming, but it would not be enough as Ferris State would ultimately take the set and the match by respective scores of 25-18 and 3-0.

Despite the loss, Kalinowski was still able to secure her 11th double-double of the season with 26 assists and 12 digs.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, Oct. 28 when they travel to Kenosha, Wis. to take on the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside.
