Laker Hockey Gives Spartans All They Can Handle Before Falling 4-2

Box Score

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Lake Superior State hockey program (0-2) fell on the road to the No. 9 Michigan State Spartans (2-0) in a hard-fought battle by a final score of 4-2 on Sunday.

The Spartans would score the lone goal in the opening period with the first career goal of freshman Artyom Levshunov, but senior goaltender Ethan Langenegger (Kamloops, B.C.) ensured that the Lakers were still within one going into the intermission after LSSU was heavily outshot in the opening period.

At the 8:25 mark in the second period, Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) found the back of the net to tie up the score after finding a loose puck in the Michigan State defensive zone and firing it in for the unassisted goal to tie up the score at 1-1. However, Red Savage was able to retake the lead for the Spartans less than 30 seconds of game time later.

Early in the third period, Michigan State was able to extend their lead to 3-1, but the Lakers responded shortly thereafter at the 4:43 mark as John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) slotted home the first goal of his career with assists from fellow freshman Reagan Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) and senior captain Artyom Borshyov (Vitebsk, Belarus). However, despite having multiple strong chances to tie up the score, Spartan goaltender Trey Augustine was able to do just enough to hold off the Lakers until Karsen Dorwat ultimately iced the game away with an empty-netter.

Langenegger finished the day with 45 saves, earning him the third star of the game in the final stat sheet, and Jordan Venegoni (Livonia, Mich.) led all players in blocks with three.

The Lakers will look to bounce back on Friday, Oct. 13 when they return to Taffy Abel Arena for their home-opener, game one of Great Lake State Weekend against the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves.
