Laker Hockey Open CCHA Play With Overtime Winner

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (4-3-0, 1-0-0 CCHA) came away with a 4-3 overtime victory over the visiting Bemidji State Beavers (3-4-0, 2-1-0 CCHA) after Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime on Friday.

At the 5:02 mark of the opening period, freshman John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) opened up the scoring for the Lakers with a strike after Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) did enough to disrupt the play and earn an assist on the goal. Later in the period, at the 15:33 mark, Laker captain Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) doubled up the lead after firing home a power play goal with assists from reigning CCHA Forward of the Month Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) as well as Herrington. A few minutes later, the Lakers would capitalize on their second power play opportunity with Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) scoring his first of the season with Westcott and Herrington once again picking up the assists. The Beavers would get on the board late in the period with a goal from Kirklan Irey at the 18:58 mark, but the Lakers would still hold a 3-1 lead heading into the intermission.

Lleyton Roed was able to bring the Beavers within one 1:27 into the second period, but both defenses would shut down their opposition for the remainder of the period with the Lakers still leading 3-2 at the second intermission.

Then, at the 2:44 mark of the third period, Jake McLean knotted up the score for Bemidji State, tying the game at 3-3. Both teams would battle with multiple quality chances for each side, but the score would ultimately remain tied at the end of regulation.

Midway through the overtime period, Milburn would prove to be the hero with the game winning goal, extending his point streak to six games. Westcott and Bushy would also pick up assists on the game-winner to give the Lakers the extra point in the CCHA standings.

Senior goaltender Ethan Langenegger (Kamloops, B.C.) recorded 27 saves to earn the victory between the pipes, and the Laker special teams proved to be vital with the power play unit scoring on both opportunities while the LSSU penalty kill negated all three extra-man opportunities for the Beavers.

The Lakers will be looking for the series sweep on Saturday, Nov. 4 with the first puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m.
