Laker Men's Basketball Handle the Pride for First GLIAC Win

Box Score

WESTVILLE, Ind. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball team (5-2, 1-1 GLIAC) shot over 50 percent from the floor on their way to picking up their first conference win of the season against the Purdue Northwest Pride (7-3, 1-1 GLIAC) by a final score of 76-65 on Saturday.

The Pride opened up the game racing out to a 5-0 lead, but Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) knotted up the score with a three. The Lakers would keep pushing to take the lead with a three from Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and an emphatic dunk from Peter Nwoke (Lagos, Nigeria). Edmondson would then convert three more times from beyond the arc to propel LSSU on a 14-4 run to take a commanding double-digit advantage, and they kept their foot on the accelerator with a 7-0 run on their way to a 44-30 lead going into the halftime break.

Early in the second half, Womack was able to hit back-to-back threes to extend the Laker lead to 20, but the Pride managed to go on a run of their own to get back to within 12. However, a three from Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) halted Purdue Northwest in their tracks, and the Lakers were able to close out their first GLIAC victory of the season at the free throw line.

Edmondson led the way offensively with 24 points after hitting on six of his eight attempts from distance while also coming away with four steals, and Womack added 18 points of his own off the bench. Meanwhile, Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) also finished with double-digit scoring with 16 points.

The Lakers return to action on Thursday, Dec. 14 when they host the Algoma Thunderbirds in Bud Cooper Gymnasium for their first home game of the season with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
