Laker Men's Basketball Take Care of Business Against Panthers

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball program (12-5,  4-3 GLIAC) earned their third win in a row after downing the Davenport Panthers (5-10, 1-5 GLIAC) by a final score of 73-61 on Saturday.

The Panthers got on the board first on their way to a 4-0 lead, but Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) caught fire early with four-straight threes for a 12-2 run by himself. Davenport fought back to retake the lead, but this time it was Omar Suleiman (Canton, Mich.) with the response, hitting three-consecutive shots from beyond the arc to put the Lakers back in front. LSSU was able to continue their hot shooting from distance as Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.), Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.), and Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) got in on the action to start a 15-0 run to close out the opening half with a 40-28 lead.

Both teams went back and forth to open the second half, but the Panthers managed to claw their way back to within three just after the under-12 media timeout. However, Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) took matters into his own hands, earning back-to-back trips to the free throw line, and the Lakers continued to keep themselves firmly ahead with four more baskets from Womack as LSSU was able to close out the Panthers for their second win on the week.

Womack led the way offensively with a career-high 21 points with Soper and Okerlund also scoring double-figures with 12 each. Meanwhile, Perkins finished the day with 9 points to go along with a team-leading 8 rebounds and a game-high 4 blocks.

The Lakers return to action on Thursday, Jan. 25 when they travel to take on the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m.
