HAMMOND, Ind. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team (6-11, 2-6 GLIAC) came away with a five-set victory over the Ursuline Arrows (1-19, 1-7 G-MAC) at the Midwest Regional Crossover on Friday.
The Lakers got off to a quick start and proceeded to use a 12-2 run to take a ten point lead in the opening set with multiple service aces from both Ally Lasley (Birch Run, Mich.) and Vanessa Swerdon (Toronto, Ont.). However, Ursuline was able to claw their way back with a 14-2 run of their own to come back and take the opening set 25-22.Â
The Arrows got off to the early lead in the second set, but three-straight aces from Morgan Deming (Boyne City, Mich.) propelled her team to a 5-0 run to go in front. Both teams would then go back and forth, but the Lakers were able to go slightly ahead with a pair of kills from Gia Waters (Minneapolis, Minn.). LSSU would then close out the set with a 4-1 run that was capped off with a kill from Valeriya Varnakova (Ufa, Russia) to tie the match at 1-1.
LSSU jumped out in front early in the third set with an 8-1 run. However, just like in the opening set, Ursuline battled their way back with big runs of their own to narrowly steal the set away by a margin of 27-25.
Both teams went back and forth early in the fourth set, but the Lakers were able to pull out ahead with a 9-1 run that featured multiple kills from Shea Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.). LSSU was able to maintain their advantage before closing out the set with a 4-1 run to force a decisive fifth set.
The Lakers were able to take control midway through the fifth set with a 5-1 run. A kill from Deming put LSSU ahead 14-10, and after Ursuline managed to fend off three match points, Deming was able to put away the set and the match by respective scores of 15-13 and 3-2.
Deming and Waters tied for the game lead in kills with 16 each with Waters adding 10 digs for the double-double and Deming notching 7 blocks as well. Swerdon led all players in assists with 31, and Lasley led her team in digs with 15.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 when they take on Truman State with the first serve scheduled for 10 a.m.
