HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) Lakers (5-8, 2-3 GLIAC) fell to the Michigan Tech Huskies by a final score of 3-0 on Friday.
Both teams battled early with the Lakers holding an 11-9 lead behind hills from
Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and
Morgan Deming (Boyne City, Mich.). However, the Huskies utilized runs of 4-0 and 6-0 to push ahead and claim the opening set 25-18.
LSSU started off strong in the second set with runs of 3-0 and 4-0 behind multiple kills from Velasque and a
Jordyn Haller (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) service ace to take an 11-8 advantage. However, despite kills from
Gia Waters (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Deming, Michigan Tech managed to go on a pair of 5-0 runs to take the second set 25-17.
The Lakers took an early lead with a 4-0 run that featured a kill from Waters and an ace from Velasque, but both teams would go back and forth for the next several points. However, the Huskies were able to generate an 8-1 run to push LSSU to the brink, and despite kills from Waters and Velasque, Michigan Tech would ultimately close out the set and the match by respective scores of 25-20 and 3-0.
LSSU will look to bounce back when they face the Northern Michigan Wildcats in Marquette, Mich. on Saturday, Oct. 5 with the first serve scheduled for 4 p.m.
