SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball team (4-1) came back to beat the UIndy Greyhounds (2-1) in overtime by a final score of 96-94.
Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) opened up the game with a three ball, the first of seven he would sink on the day, as both teams would battle early in the first half. The Greyhounds would then find some life with an 8-1 run to take a 20-16 lead. The Lakers went back in front with a three from Adam Harakow (Edmonton, Alta.), but UIndy responded with another run of 8-0 before Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) ended it with a three of his own. The Lakers got back to within two points, but an 11-2 run by the Greyhounds had UIndy ahead 41-33 at the halftime break.Â
The Greyhounds were able to carry their momentum into the second half, leading by as many as 15 points. However, after starting point guard Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.) went down with an apparent injury (would later return to the game), LSSU rallied with an 8-0 run behind a three and an and-one from Harakow. The Lakers continued to let it fly from beyond the arc with more threes from Soper, Harakow, and Edmondson, and Edmondson would then fire a jump pass inside to Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) who finished the job to get his team back to within four. Both teams would then trade points, but Edmondson was ready to take matters into his own hands, scoring 10 of the Lakers' last 14 points in regulation. Then, down two in the final minute, Womack drove inside and cleaned up his own miss with the put back to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Edmondson continued to have the hot hand, scoring from deep three more times in the extra five minutes of action to complete the comeback and secure the win.
Edmondson led the way offensively for the Lakers with 33 points on the day. Meanwhile, Soper and Harakow finished with 16 points each, and Perkins posted a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double. Womack joined the rest of the starting lineup in double figures as well with 12 points of his own.
The Lakers will now turn their attention to the McKendree DII Classic, presented by State Farm, with tipoff against Missouri-St. Louis scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
