CHICAGO, Ill. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) volleyball team (7-16, 2-10 GLIAC) fell to the Roosevelt Lakers (3-20, 1-11 GLIAC) by a final score of 3-1 on Saturday.
Both teams battled early as an Avery Headworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.) service ace knotted up the score at 4-4, but Roosevelt was able to pull ahead with a pair of 5-1 runs. LSSU would keep fighting with a kill from Shea Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.) and another ace from Headworth, but Roosevelt ultimately closed out the opening set.
Roosevelt was able to jump out to an early lead in the second set, but LSSU battled back with a 4-0 run to take the lead with a pair of kills from Vanessa Swerdon (Toronto, Ont.). Both teams would then go back and forth with LSSU getting multiple kills from Giselle Wiitanen (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.). However, RU managed to narrowly close out the set 25-22.
LSSU raced ahead for an early 5-0 lead in the third set behind a kill and an ace from Ally Lasley (Birch Run, Mich.). RU was able to close the gap, but LSSU pushed back out ahead with kills from Swerdon and Berisoff. Roosevelt fought back to take the lead, but LSSU would not give up that easily, using back-to-back kills from Gia Waters (Minneapolis, Minn.) to extend the set before both teams found themselves tied at 25-25. LSSU was able to stave off three match points before back-to-back kills from Rachel Steele (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) put the set away 29-27.
LSSU struck first with a kill from Waters, and another kill from Waters ignited a 5-1 scoring run. Both teams would then go back and forth for a majority of the set. However, Roosevelt would ultimately pull ahead late with runs of 6-1 and 4-1 to close out the set and the match by respective scores of 25-19 and 3-1.
Steele led the way offensively for LSSU with 10 kills. Lasley led all players in digs with 17 while Jordyn Haller (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) notched 12 digs of her own to join her in double figures. Meanwhile, Swerdon posted a game-high 35 assists on the night.Â
The Lakers will now turn their attention to a trip to Detroit where they will face the Wayne State Warriors on Friday, Nov. 8 with the first serve scheduled for 7 p.m.
