Laker Volleyball Falls on the Road to Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) volleyball team (7-12, 2-11 GLIAC) fell on the road to the Wayne State Warriors (12-11, 9-4 GLIAC) by a margin of 3-0 on Friday.

The Warriors got off to an early lead in the opening set. The Lakers kept fighting with multiple kills from Morgan Deming (Boyne City, Mich.) and Gia Waters (Minneapolis, Minn.), but Wayne State was able to claim the opening set 25-10.

The Warriors were once again able to take the early advantage in the second set, but LSSU clawed their way back into it with a pair of kills from Waters. The Lakers would then put together a 4-1 run with kills from Jordyn Haller (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), and Vanessa Swerdon (Toronto, Ont.) to pair with an ace from Deming. However, despite kills from Waters and Giselle Wiitanen (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), Wayne State was able to settle in and take the second set 25-16.

LSSU came out swinging in the third set, jumping ahead to a 9-3 advantage with an 8-1 run with kills from Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Avery Headworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.). However, the Warriors fought back with a big run of their own, and despite late kills from Shea Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.) and Deming, Wayne State was able to close out the set and the match by respective scores of 25-17 and 3-0.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 9 when they travel to face Grand Valley State with the first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
