MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) Lakers (6-6-1, 4-1-0 CCHA) earned a 4-2 road victory at St. Thomas (3-7-4, 2-4-3 CCHA) on Friday.
Both teams battled early, but Branden Piku (Harrison Twp., Mich.) opened up the scoring after slotting the puck through to put in the rebound from a shot by Jacob Conrad (Green Bay, Wis.) with Blake Humphrey (Rochester, N.Y.) also picking up an assist on the play. Both defenses would then continue to lock in with neither side able to add another goal prior to the intermission.
In the second period, it would be the offenses that came to life. Chase Foley and Lucas Wahlin each scored a special teams goal early into the period to put the Tommies ahead, but at the 9:31 mark, Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) tied up the score after sending the puck off of a Tommie skate and between the legs of UST goaltender Blake Sibell in the closing seconds of a power play after being set up by Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) and Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany). With that goal, Tritt has also extended his point streak to a career-best seven games. A few minutes later, Johnny Druskinis (Plymouth, Mich.) put LSSU back in front with the Lakers' second power play goal of the night with assists from Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) and Milburn.
The defenses would dig in again throughout the third period as the Tommies kept searching for the equalizer, but in the final minute, Milburn picked off a pass and waltzed the puck down the ice for the empty-netter to put the game away.Â
The Lakers now improve to 4-1 in league play and sit atop the CCHA standings with a points percentage of .800.Â
LSSU will be looking for the series sweep on Saturday, Nov. 30 with puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m. Central Time.
