Laker Hockey Sweeps NMU With 5-1 Win

Lakers now lead the Cappo Cup Series 2-0 and hold a +9 goal differential

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (3-5-0, 2-0-0 CCHA) completed the weekend sweep over Upper Peninsula rival Northern Michigan (1-9-0, 0-4-0 CCHA) with a 5-1 victory on Saturday to place the Lakers firmly in the driver's seat of the 2024-25 Cappo Cup Series.

The Wildcats were able to open up the scoring just over two minutes into the game with a goal from Zach Michaelis, but goaltender Rorke Applebee (Chateauguay, Que.) would settle in to keep NMU scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Late in the opening period, the Lakers would make their move. Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) slotted home a strike to the back of the net off of a nice pass from Sasha Teleguine (North Attleborough, Mass.). Then, Timo Bakos put the Lakers ahead in the closing seconds of the opening period with his third goal in as many games. Jacob Conrad (Green Bay, Wis.) and John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) picked up assists on the play with Conrad's marking the first point of his collegiate career.

Midway through the second period, LSSU senior captain Grant Hindman (Oakland, Mich.) scored the second goal of his career, both of which have occurred in the Berry Events Center, with some help from Teleguine and William Ahlrik (Tidaholm, Sweden).

14 minutes into the third period, Tritt went top bar down to score his second of the night with Teleguine and Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) also notching points on the play and marking a three-point night for Teleguine. Then, less than a minute later, Conrad fired the puck into the corner of the net for the first goal of his young career with help from Bakos and the first career assist from Everett Pietila (Howell, Mich.) to close out a 5-1 victory in Marquette.

Applebee recorded 28 saves on the night to pick up the win between the pipes, and four different Lakers posted a multi-point evening.

The LSSU penalty kill unit remains perfect on the season through eight games at 32-32.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, Nov. 15 when they host the Ferris State Bulldogs with puck drop of game one scheduled for 7:07 p.m. Game two of the series will be played at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, Mich.
