Laker Women's Basketball Use Fourth Quarter Comeback to Beat RU

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's basketball team (2-6, 1-1 GLIAC) completed a fourth quarter comeback to take down the Roosevelt Lakers (2-5, 0-1 GLIAC) by a final score of 54-52 on Thursday.

Grace Bradford (Maple City, Mich.) opened up the scoring with a layup down low, but Roosevelt pushed ahead with a 10-0 run. Breah Golden (Arcadia, Wis.) was able to connect on a pair of jumpers, but RU found themselves ahead 15-7 after 10 minutes of action.

CeCe Hacker (Omaha, Neb.) and Golden opened up the second quarter with a pair of threes to quickly trim the lead down to two, but Roosevelt continued to answer. Taylor Clarey (Rochester, Mich.) drove in for a pair of layups to keep the Lakers within striking distance, and another three from Golden had LSSU within ten at the half, trailing 20-30.

Both teams battled throughout the third quarter, answering one another at every turn, but RU still found themselves leading 45-35 going into the fourth.

Bradford and Hacker scored a couple of quick baskets in the paint to open the final frame. Roosevelt was able to get two points of their own, but Hacker and Golden let it fly from beyond the arc to quickly make it a two-point ball game. Bradford would then find Jaden Wilder (Manton, Mich.) inside who tied up the game at 48-48. RU managed to retake the lead with a layup, but Bradford hit from distance to put her team ahead for the first time since the score was 2-0. Roosevelt was able to retake the lead once more, but with just over a minute to play, Bradford found Golden who hit her sixth three of the game, which ultimately turned out to be the game-winner, giving LSSU their first GLIAC victory of the season by a margin of 54-52.

Golden finished the night leading all players in scoring with 22 points while shooting 6-8 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Bradford posted her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

The Lakers return to action on Thursday, Dec. 19 when they host the Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars for their home-opener in Bud Cooper Gymnasium with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
