SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The No. 10 Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball team (14-2, 5-1 GLIAC) came away with a strong 87-78 victory over Grand Valley State (GVSU) (6-8, 2-4 GLIAC) on Saturday.
Both teams battled early with LSSU ahead 14-13, but Lake State was able to flex their muscles, pulling ahead with a 19-2 run as the home team let it fly from behind the arc, including Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) who sank multiple long balls during the stretch. Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) would then hit a pair of threes to propel his team to a 9-0 run to follow that up, extending the LSSU advantage to 42-19. GVSU would keep fighting, but Nino Carter-Smith (Warren, Mich.) would find Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.) all alone in the corner to put LSSU up 49-30 going into the break.Â
Both teams traded buckets early on in the second half, always seeming to have an answer for one another. However, GVSU managed to slowly grind their way back into the game as they started to find their own rhythm from behind the arc. However, LSSU was able to weather the storm and ice the game away at the charity stripe.Â
Edmondson led the way offensively with 19 points on the night with Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) close behind with 18 points of his own. Womack and Soper also finished the night in double figures with 16 and 13 points, respectively, with Womack also dishing out 6 assists.Â
The Lakers return to action on Thursday, Jan. 16 when they travel to face Purdue Northwest with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
