SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball team (16-3, 7-2 GLIAC) led from wire to wire on their way to an 82-72 victory over Upper Peninsula rival Michigan Tech (12-5, 7-2 GLIAC) on Thursday.
The Lakers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after a three from Andy Soma (Traverse City, Mich.). The Huskies managed to twice cut the lead down to two, but LSSU responded with a 14-2 run that featured threes from Harrison Sorrelle (Grand Haven, Mich.) and Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.). Michigan Tech was able to put together a run of their own, but the Lakers still found themselves in control at the break, leading 38-28 at halftime.
In the second half, Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) started to let it fly with a pair of threes before throwing down an alley-oop slam from Edmondson to extend the Laker lead to 18. The Huskies managed to trim the lead back down to single digits on multiple occasions, but the Lakers always seemed to have an answer to hold them back before eventually closing out the victory at the free throw line.Â
Edmondson led the way offensively with 21 points while Soper came away with 19 points of his own while also grabbing eight rebounds, three blocks, and a steal. Adam Harakow (Edmonton, Alta.) also ended the night in double figures with 12 points off the bench.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 when they host the Northern Michigan Wildcats with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
