PREVIEW: Laker Hockey to Cross Upper Peninsula to Battle Huskies

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) Lakers are set to travel to Houghton, Mich. to face their Upper Peninsula rivals, Michigan Tech, for a weekend CCHA series.

Stories to watch:
  • This will mark the only regular season meetings between these two programs.
  • The Huskies hold the edge in the all-time series by a margin of  56-30-9, but both teams have taken points from one another in the previous three weekend series matchups.
  • Last season, the Lakers and Huskies split their two games in the Soo with LSSU taking game one by a 3-1 margin before the Huskies responded with a 1-0 victory the following day. This series marked the emergence of LSSU goaltender Easton Hesse who stopped 67 of 68 shots that he faced to earn the title of CCHA Goaltender of the Week after opening the 2023-24 season third on the depth chart.
  • The Huskies are led by Stiven Sardarian who enters the weekend tied for the league-lead in points with 20 while the Lakers' top point-producer, Connor Milburn, is not far behind with 17 tallies of his own.
  • This series will also be a dual between two of the CCHA's top emerging goaltenders in LSSU rookie Rorke Applebee (2.76 GAA; .911 SV%) and Michigan Tech transfer Derek Mullahy (2.35 GAA; .914 SV%).
  • The Lakers return three of their top four point producers in Connor Milburn (35), Dawson Tritt (25), and Timo Bakos (24) who will all be relied heavily upon this season after the departure of Hobey Baker Nominee and All-CCHA First-Teamer Jared Westcott.
  • C. Milburn enters the weekend leading the team in points with 17 while Schweitzer (13) Teleguine (13), Bakos (12), Herrington (12), Bushy (10) and Tritt (10) have also notched double-digit points so far this season.
  • Teleguine ranks second the CCHA in goal scoring with 9 after a 4-goal weekend against Bemidji State.
  • Schweitzer enters the weekend leading the team in assists with 12 which ranks third in the CCHA.
  • 21 different Lakers have recorded at least one point so far this season while 14 Lakers have scored at least one goal.
