Morgan Deming scored 12 kills for Lake Superior State, but the Lakers were beaten in straight sets by Purdue Northwest, 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 on Friday afternoon.
The GLIAC clash came hours after the Lakers (1-18, 1-11 GLIAC) dueled in five sets with Saginaw Valley State at Bud Cooper Gymnasium Thursday night. Though the Pride (11-9, 5-6 GLIAC) took early leads in the first and third sets, the Lakers battled back with resilience, bringing the score level at 9-9 in the first and and taking an 11-10 lead in the third. But middle set runs secured both of those sets, along with a 10-1 run late in the second.Â
Deming hit an outstanding .476 in the match, while the Lakers got great defensive contributions from
Mia Garcia and
Elisa Rizzoli. Garcia finished with 15 digs and Rizzoli added 11. Garcia talled double-digit digs in her fourth straight match and set a new career high.
Redshirt senior
Hannah Callaway scored two kills on six hits, adding nine digs and an assist.
Caitlyn Matelski added five kills.
LSSU plays at home next weekend, with Senior Day set for Friday at 7:00 PM against Wayne State. Then the Lakers play Grand Valley State, Saturday at 4:00 PM to wrap up their home slate. Two games on the road follow against U.P. rivals Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech.
